Frequently Asked Questions

Zero cost to you as the host employer. The J-1 program is designed so employers can receive qualified international talent at no charge. Many host employers voluntarily offer housing assistance or signing bonuses as part of the intern's total compensation β€” but this is entirely optional, not required.
Most interns arrive approximately 60 days after being accepted. They need to visit a U.S. Embassy, book flights, and complete their visa processing. The faster you complete your Host Organization profile and make your selections from online interviews, the sooner they can arrive.
Most J-1 internship programs run for 12 months, though some are 6 or 18 months. After the program ends, most employers simply begin the process again with a fresh group β€” creating a reliable, recurring talent pipeline for your business.
Intern stipends are typically comparable to what a U.S. employee would earn in a similar role. Interns are not a source of cheap labor β€” they are young professionals gaining structured career experience in their chosen field, and must be compensated fairly.
Interns must receive training that aligns with their field of study or professional experience. They cannot perform unskilled work like cleaning, janitorial tasks, or general manual labor. They can perform most skilled and professional tasks that match their occupational category.
There is no fixed maximum. Hospitality businesses often start with groups of 4 so interns can share housing, then scale up. A good starting point is filling up to 20% of your open positions with interns, keeping at least 80% U.S. employees.
J-1 interns come to the U.S. on a cultural exchange visa. They are motivated young professionals who want to gain hands-on training in their field and experience American business culture firsthand.
GEC Exchanges verifies program legitimacy, issues the DS-2019 form, processes the visa, monitors participants throughout the program, and ensures full compliance with State Department regulations.
